For a straightforward interior stair railing in mild steel with a powder-coated finish, expect to pay roughly $75 to $120 per linear foot, installed. That includes design, fabrication, finishing, and installation. A basic exterior railing with minimal decorative elements falls in the same range.

If you want ornamental details — scrollwork, basket twists, custom picket designs — the price moves up to $120 to $175 per linear foot. These elements are hand-formed and take significantly more shop time.

Premium materials push the price higher. Stainless steel railings start around $150 per linear foot. Corten (weathering steel) and railings with integrated glass or cable infill can run $175 to $250+, depending on complexity and code requirements.

What drives the cost up? Curved sections are the biggest factor — bending steel to match a curved staircase requires custom jigs and careful fitting. Difficult installation conditions (second-story exteriors, concrete anchoring, retrofit into existing structures) also add labor. And any project requiring engineer-stamped drawings for code compliance adds design cost.

What keeps cost reasonable? Straight runs, standard materials (mild steel or aluminum), simple picket patterns, and accessible installation locations. If you can be flexible on the exact design, we can usually find ways to deliver a great-looking railing within your budget.
